British Columbia Trucking Association

The BC Trucking Association (BCTA) hosted a groundbreaking event called Zeroing in on ZEV: Low- and Zero-Emission Commercial Vehicle Summit on February 21, 2024. Held at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, the event was the largest of its kind in Canada, with over 750 registrants, 25 low and zero-emission trucks, and representation from 14 leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

The Summit brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to explore the latest advancements in zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and their crucial role in shaping the future of trucking. The event featured an esteemed lineup of speakers who spoke about the urgency of embracing sustainable solutions and highlighted the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in the transition to zero-emission fleets.

\Matt Schrap, CEO of Harbor Trucking Association, delivered a captivating presentation of California’s experience with heavy-duty ZEVs. He provided valuable perspectives on the state’s pioneering efforts in promoting ZEV adoption within the trucking industry, highlighting the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from California’s initiatives.

Following Matt’s presentation, Wayne Scott, Loblaw’s Senior Director of Transportation, discussed the company’s commitment to sustainability and the strategic integration of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) into their operations to reduce emissions and improve efficiency. Jason Scultety, Senior Key Account Manager of Fleet Electrification with BC Hydro, shared his organization’s journey toward incorporating BEVs and emphasized the importance of infrastructure development, operational considerations, and stakeholder engagement. Wayne and Jason’s firsthand accounts provided insights into the practicalities and benefits of transitioning to electric fleets.

Jeff Grant, HTEC’s Vice-President of Transportation Solutions, shared his wealth of knowledge on the BC Hydrogen Pilot Truck Project to provide a hydrogen fuel-cell point of view. Jeff’s insights shed light on the promising potential of hydrogen fuel cells as a clean energy solution for heavy-duty vehicles. He elaborated on the successes and challenges encountered on the project so far, highlighting the practical advantages of hydrogen fuel cell technology, including fast refuelling time and long-range capabilities.

Attendees had the exclusive opportunity to interact with representatives from 14 OEMs, who showcased their latest models and innovations in zero-emission technology. From electric trucks to hydrogen-powered vehicles, attendees witnessed firsthand the impressive advancements driving the evolution of clean transportation.

BCTA also showcased its groundbreaking Clean Carrier Program, a comprehensive eco-certification initiative designed to recognize and support motor carriers committed to reducing emissions and adopting sustainable practices. Through the program, participating companies undergo rigorous assessments and, if needed, implement suggested measures to reduce their carbon footprint, improve fuel efficiency, and promote environmental stewardship. By achieving certification, carriers demonstrate their dedication to sustainability and position themselves as leaders in the transition to clean transportation.

Attendees at the ZEV event were further engaged with the opportunity to participate in ride-a-longs with a range of battery-electric trucks, including the Freightliner eCascadia, Kenworth K370E, and Lion Electric 6. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into the performance and capabilities of these vehicles in real-world scenarios.

The success of Zeroing in on ZEV emphasizes the growing momentum behind the adoption of zero-emission vehicles within the trucking industry. By bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, BCTA continues to spearhead efforts to accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation practices.

As we reflect on the impact of this milestone event, it is clear that the path to a greener future lies in collaboration, innovation, and collective action. BCTA’s commitment to driving positive change has never been greater, and we aim to carry forward the inspiration and momentum generated at Zeroing in on ZEV to shape a more sustainable future for the trucking industry.
