Tell us a bit about yourself – how long have you been a part of the industry and working for Aero Delivery? Tell us a bit about yourself – how long have you been a part of the industry and working for Aero Delivery?

My family got into the trucking business when we lived on a farm, so I grew up in the industry. My first truck driving experience was in our 1965 GMC grain truck. I worked on the farm and in the family trucking business most of my early years and started with Aero Delivery in 2004.

Explain your family’s deep-rooted history in the transportation industry.

My dad and two of his brothers bought gravel trailers to keep busy in the winter on the farm in the late 70s. They worked on the highway around Creighton, SK, and would take turns working 12-hour shifts. One at the wheel and one in the bunk so they got a taste of team driving early on. They went under the name of Marcoux Bros trucking. From there, they bought N Yanke Transfer for the running authorities and moved into hauling grain. When they secured a large contract hauling mail in the early 90s, the business relocated from the farm in Viscount to Saskatoon. The story is that my dad and uncles drew straws and the short one moved with the business... so our family moved to the city. I was able to watch the business grow and evolve from a start up on the farm to a global organization. I learned many important lessons watching that journey take place.

Describe your team at Aero Delivery.

We look for three qualities in our people – humility, hunger to succeed, and smarts (people smarts). If a person has a good mix of those, we can teach them the business. Our team understands that communication, problem solving, and being easy to deal with are important. If we can do those basics things really well, it will make us seem cutting edge in a lot of ways. We strive to create an unparalleled experience for our customers.

What services do you provide Canada's trucking industry?

Our tagline is “We keep the prairies rolling.” We move time- and temperature-sensitive freight to, through, and from the prairies. Saskatchewan can represent logistical challenges that our network is designed to overcome. We have multi-temperature warehouses in Saskatoon and Regina that complement our extensive multi temperature transportation network.

How has Aero Delivery 1) made safety a priority within the company and 2) adapted to meet the evolving needs for the industry?

Safety is written in one of our value statements, “Be safety driven.” We have a comprehensive safety bonus and profit share program that rewards safe behaviour. We are HACCP registered, BRC accredited and are in the process of becoming COR certified. We believe that being safe equates to being successful. If we create a culture that believes in safety, we will attract people that help move that forward. Safety isn’t a finish line that we cross, rather it is the horizon we are always moving towards.

Tell us about Aero Delivery’s initiative and role in delivering vaccinations to the Province of Saskatchewan.

Aero has been assisting in vaccine distribution for many years, prior to COVID. When the opportunity to assist with the COVID vaccine came forward, we were more than prepared to assist. It was a proud moment watching everyone come together to be part of a historical event like that. Our team rose to the occasion to make sure that the people of Saskatchewan received their vaccines.

Talk about your involvement with the STA.

I first joined the board in 2014. Since that time the organization has gone through significant changes.

I am currently in the first year of a two-year term as Board Chair. I was apprehensive about stepping into the role; however, our Executive Director Susan Ewart and the rest of her team in the STA office make life easy for me. The Board has also been incredibly supportive and a great source of knowledge.

What have been some career satisfactions and challenges?

A challenge for me early on was understanding how to ask for help and to use all the people resources we have. Once I understood the importance of this, our business changed for the better. My favourite thing to do in our business is distribute profit share. If the business is profitable then the team gets to share in that. There is nothing better than handing people cash and celebrating that success together.

What do you enjoy most about working in the transportation industry?

The unpredictable nature of the industry is appealing to me. It doesn’t allow for complacency or boredom. I get to do something different all the time.

What advice do you have for someone considering a career in the industry?

I think it is a great time to get involved. The past year and half really put on a spotlight on the importance of the industry, and specifically the people in it. I believe this is going to create more opportunities for all of us going forward. This is an industry that truly makes a difference in people’s lives and why wouldn’t you want to take part in that?

How do you enjoy spending time outside of work?

I love spending time with my wife and daughters. We enjoy travelling or being at the lake in the summer. I am also an avid cyclist and am competing in a week-long race this fall in British Columbia.
