Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) Industry Workforce Advisor Oriana Kolonsky took some time to sit down and chat about what her role with the association entails; how she can help membership with employment, and more; including the importance of the AMTA Road Knights program.

As Industry Workforce Advisor, what does your position entail? My position covers a broad range of areas. I promote opportunities within the Alberta transportation industry and work to enhance workplace development. I also provide labour adjustment strategies and expertise to industry members. An exciting part of my role is working with carriers and organizations to form strategic supports and tools or resources for industry. I work with industry as a whole, as well as employers, community organizations and persons seeking to enter careers in transportation.

I liaise and form partnerships with community organizations or schools in order to educate and inform organizational staff about our industry, trends and career opportunities. This helps organizations better serve their clients looking at transportation careers. These organizations then host information sessions where I present our industry and its opportunities to people across the province. Road Knights and AMTA Carrier Members also join me in order to provide further insight to groups. Some organizations we’re involved with include the Centre for Newcomers, Youth Empowerment and Support Services, Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers, the Alberta Government, Millard Health, EmployAbilities, the Edmonton Public School Board and more.

Tell us more about the AMTA Road Knights program. The Road Knights are known as a team of prestigious drivers who have superior driving skills, impeccable driving records and a strong desire to promote the industry, highway safety and careers. For every term, applicants are short-listed and selected based on their collisionfree driving records, experience and dedication for the commercial transportation industry. Road Knights promote the industry by attending schools, business clubs, community organizations and other events or engagements. They are the face of the commercial transportation industry. The participation of the team members is made possible thanks to the generous support of our employer members.

Current Road Knights are Ed Stasyshyn (Trimac) and Glenn McNeilly (Bison Transport). In December 2019, a new team of Road Knights will be selected. We thank Ed and Glenn for their passion, dedication and love of the open road!
