Two industry workhorses were honored by their peers at the 72nd Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) Management Conference held in October.
The prestigious Service to Industry Award, sponsored by Shaw Tracking, was bestowed upon Sterling Hornoi, a fixture in truck transport for more than 50 years. Also honored, with the Volvo Trucks Canada Driver of the Year, was Len Baumgartner, who has amassed a 33-year accident-free driving record.
Ever the entrepreneur, Sterling Hornoi drove a semi –trailer transport from 1959-65 before venturing into the used-truck business and eventually establishing Sterling Truck and Trailer Sales that continues to operate and expand. Shaw Tracking’s Steve Atnikov, from Winnipeg, made the award presentation.
Currently driving for Reimer Express Lines Ltd., Len Baumgartner started out on the loading dock in 1968 and began driving about six years later. He has worked for a number of carriers including Motorways, Rosenau, T&T Atomic, CPT and Reimer. Volvo’s Calgary rep, Terry Warkentin, made the award presentation.
Both Shaw Tracking and Volvo Trucks have been long-time supporters of the STA, as well as the truck transport industry across Canada.
“These prestigious awards bring together the best in our industry,” noted STA President Glen Ertell. “Our industry is fortunate to have top calibre people and top companies like Shaw and Volvo participating actively.”
More than 100 persons were on hand at the STA banquet as the awards were made. This year’s keynote speaker was Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter. |
